The Great British Sewing Bee

If you’re anything like us you were probably glued to the latest series of the Sewing Bee! It seemed to fly by and I’m already looking forward to series 3…

Huge congratulations to Heather! I honestly didn’t see that coming, although that final dress was amazing. It was an epic battle right to the end and it seems almost unfair that only one of them could win. All the contestants were so talented in different ways and each had their own particular set of skills - I’m quite glad it wasn’t me that had to choose just one of them! I’m in complete awe of what they achieved: coats, silk gowns, leggings; all under huge time pressures and also whilst being filmed! There’s no way I could handle being filmed unpicking a seam for the umpteenth time or sewing in a zip backwards. Even if it meant hanging out with the utterly dreamy Mr Patrick Grant…

Unlike the Bake-Off, I’ve really enjoyed the history segments of the show and they’ve made me really jealous of those people who have the job title ‘Fashion Historian’! What I love the most about the series though is this - it’s shown just how popular home sewing and dressmaking is and hopefully will have inspired so many people to dig out their old machines and get stuck in. It’s even inspired my mum, who taught me the basics of sewing, to buy a new machine, and get stuck into the Cath Kidston ‘Sew’ book. She remarked to me that the Bee teaches her something new each week! We live in an age of disposable, mass-produced, cheap fashion which is both hugely unethical and ecologically unsound. Making your own clothes is not only fun and rewarding but better for the world we live in. What’s not to love about that?!
